Simon and Garfunkel – The Dangling Conversation – 1966 [HQ REMIX/REMASTER]
Published at : August 31, 2021
"The Dangling Conversation" was recorded by Simon & Garfunkel June 21, 1966 and released as a single in July 1966 on Columbia Records. It was the 2nd single from their 3rd studio album, "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme". It peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and never charted in the UK. Enjoy my High-Quality Remix/Remaster of this Folk-Rock classic.
The album was their 1st to be recorded on a new 8-track recorder, which they cajoled Columbia Records to use. Vocal takes were overdubbed, as they found it difficult to get "decent separation" between Paul’s voice and guitar. The single did not perform as well as they had hoped, that the song was "above the kids”. It was a “college kid’s song”, about failed communication between lovers.
I had this album on reel-to-reel at both 7 1/2 and 3 3/4 IPS back in the day. I don't recall if I had it on LP... I have the 1st CD mastering from the mid-80's. Such a great album from a very pivotal time in music history.
About the original mix:
It was the product of Columbia’s “360-Stereo Sound” mixing technique, where instruments were slammed into the right or left and dead-pan mono vocals to facilitate mono mixes. The vocals were fairly hot and in desperate need of DeESSing.
About my remix:
On the vocals, I applied a DeESSer. [Every “S” in the original vocal track made me cringe]. I tried applying more stereo reverb, thinking it would enhance the stereo image, but it actually killed the vocals, so I backed it out. I filtered out some of the crackling of Paul’s very closely-miced guitar at the beginning. I gave the final mixdown a nice acoustic EQ to give a shimmer to the vocals and guitars with a more-pronounced low-end.
Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Instruments, Percussion and Bass into 4 separate tracks. Adobe Audition 2020 was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, Delay, EQ, and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
