The Point of Power

Ever heard the saying, “If at first you don't succeed, try try again.”?

Trying is not an action; you cannot “try.” You either do or do not.

For those that want to do more than just ‘try’ there is a concept called the “point of power” and you are either above or below the point.

Below the point, people do three things. The first one here is blame. And who do people blame? Anyone they possibly can: the government, their mother-in-law, their staff, their competition, anyone and everyone - it is a means to deflect. To deflect attention away from yourself - the person who really has control over the situation.

The next thing people do below the point of power is make excuses. How many of you have employees, or team members that are experts at giving excuses? As long as the excuses are accepted and tolerated they will continue to be a go-to solution when someone is under the gun.

And the third thing that people do below the point of power is live in a state of denial. These people think that they are rock stars but they are toxic to the culture and to the organization.

Notice that Blame, Excuses, and Denial can be summed up as “BED”. Those people stay trapped in the proverbial “bed” of life.

People above the point of power implement three things as well: ownership, accountability, and responsibility, which can be summed up as “OAR”.

People take the “oar” of life and chart their own course. They do this by being responsible for the situations they find themselves in, being accountable for the decisions that they make and the circumstances that they are in, and taking ownership for those situations.

Everyone has a choice. You can either choose to be powerless, living below the point of power or powerful, living above the point of power. Nobody else has this control over you; it is your daily choice.

For more information about Which Comes First…Motivation or Action? check out my video for more details.

Even when you know about being below and above the point of power. And you have made a decision to live above the point of power there are going to be times where you are not perfect. There will be times when you will find yourself dipping below the point of power.

The important thing is to realize when that happens and then make the best next decision to get back above the point of power.

You may not always be able to do that on your own. It may require other people to point out those things for us.

Whether that is a coach, an accountability partner, your spouse, significant other, or a good friend, you want to make sure you surround yourself with people that will pull you out of being powerless.
