Hello. Welcome back to our YouTube channel. Please make sure to subscribe for more Elephant zone videos. Today's video is another treatment video conducted by the wildlife conservation department. The officers are preparing the tranquilizer gun to sedate the wild animal. When treating wild Elephants, the sedation process is done by shooting/darting the drug from a distant place. Here we can see the officers insert the red dart inside the gun and search for the wounded animal.
It should be specially mentioned that the sedatives used here are mild. The Elephant in this video got injured due to a trap gun that people use for hunting. The trap guns usually works when animals move across it. Pigs and other small animals die when shot by a trap gun. But for Elephants mostly death won’t occur but can cause heavy injuries throughout his body. The wildlife officers search for the Elephant to examine the wound and start the treatment. As said earlier, just partial sedatives are used to make the animal a bit unconscious. The wildlife conservation officers make sure to not let the animal fall to the ground as if so, the treatments will be challenging, and after the treatments, the animal won't be able to stand up. The animal got darted. He gets panics as it might feel a bit painful and turns towards the officers.
Usually, it takes 15-20 minutes for an Elephant to get sedated. Here the officers slowly go near to the animal. This is a perilous process. Since the animal is not in a wholly unconscious state, it can get revived back soon. Therefore before starting the treatments, the officers must ensure that the animal is in the correct sedated state. Here we can see a swollen leg, and the Elephant keeps by bending it. The trap gun has few bullet-type things, and one of those has hit the Elephant's leg, making it wounded. We can see that the animal is still moving even though it is in a sedated state.
When closely examining the upper part of the forelimb, a white color spot is visible. The gun trap blasts for few parts and caused injuries in few spots of the animal. This is the place where the trap gunshot has struck the animal. The whole leg has swollen as the gunshot was struck to the upper part of the forelimb. Here we can see the mouth is also a bit swollen. The medical officer decides that he has encountered few shots from the same trap gun or may be due to some other explosives used for hunting purposes.
Now the treatment starts by injecting antibiotics, antiseptics, and other inflammation reduction drugs. It is frequently asked why these animals won't be treated surgically. For Elephants in orphanages carrying out such surgical treatments is easy. Because once such treatments are given, people can look after them under proper surgical conditions. But these are wild animals. If such surgical operations were carried out, the wound, get worst once they when to the deeper levels of the forest. The attempt here is to use maximum surgical conditions in the field to save the animal's life no matter what it takes. The officers are risking their lives for these treatments. This is just a phase of the whole treatment process. The officers have to go through a lot later to find the same animal to carry on with its treatment process to secure its life.
A lot of officers are gathered and treating the Elephant. We can see not only one person but many are injecting stuff into the animal. This is because the animal might revive fast, so the process has to be quick as possible. At a close look, it is clear that the officers press the animal's body after injecting. The animal's skin is thick. Once injected, the drug might run back out without giving the expected results. To prevent that, the pressing is done.
After many injections to the intramuscular area, the officers move towards the front of the animal. As shown and explained in previous videos, If drugs are needed to be added to the blood stratum as fast as possible, the injections are given to the ear area as the veins are much visible in Elephants. First of all, the ear should be disinfected using surgical or alcohol. Here we can see the officers hit the ear hard. It is not painful for the animal. This process is done to fasten the process of adding the drugs to the bloodstream.
After all the treatments, a revival drug is also given. Villagers have reported that the Elephant has moved to the forest after few hours.
