Minnesota is extending their eviction moratorium for citizens with pending disaster relief rental assistance applications.
With a majority of eviction protections set to end today, the state is encouraging renters to apply for rent assistance if they have not already done so to avoid being evicted from their homes.
Landlords can still file an eviction, but if renters receive a notice of eviction, they can still apply for assistance and potentially halt that eviction action.
Last week, the Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a measure to provide legal counsel to low-income residents that are being evicted.
Hopefully this helpful information can keep you or a loved one in your homes during these tough times, so be sure to apply for rental assistance before it’s too late.
Meanwhile, a recent article from NPR looked at why it is taking so long for rent assistance stimulus checks to hit streets and bank accounts across America.
The article lays out a few reasons why these rental assistance disaster relief funds are slow to go out:
“Around the U.S., 500 different rental assistance programs had to get up and running. In South Carolina, that took 135 days after the "help is on the way" speeches.”
Next, “Documentation requirements showing that you have a lease might sound simple, but these programs discovered that often it's not.
Finally, Proving that you're not doing something or that something's not happening has proven to be a challenge.
To deal with the landlord problem, the Treasury Department has been urging programs to employ a number of different tactics, including a handful of programs that have started to cut checks directly to tenants.
Check to see if these programs are available in your state to provide some much needed rental support to struggling Americans following the past 20 months of madness.
Finally, we’ve got some awesome news from the great state of Georgia, where Henry County has spent $6.35 million on rental assistance for thousands of eligible Americans.
According to Karen Curry Davis, president and CEO of Curry Davis Consulting Group: The average payment was $7,804 per participant, [and we] paid almost $40,000 to the landlords of residents who were in arrears, some of whom were behind 10 months or more.”
GMEN Executive Director Elizabeth Wilson stated: “With this program, we are excited that we were able to meet the needs for Henry County residents, pretty much in record time.”
