Australia's prime minister Scott Morrison on March 7th said that China, currently a close political ally of Russia, has to step up against the military assault in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, he said during a speech at the Lowy Institute think tank, "China has long claimed to have a role as one of the major powers in the world and to be a contributor to global peace and stability. No country will have a bigger impact on concluding this terrible war in Ukraine than China."

China has refused to term the conflict in Ukraine an invasion, saying that Russia's "legitimate security concerns" should be respected.

On Beijing's reaction, Morrison said, "I was listening for the voice of the Chinese government when it came to condemning the actions of Russia and there was a chilling silence."

While the West and other nations are withdrawing from trade with Russia and implementing economic sanctions, China has offered the opposite actions.
