Guardiola has admitted Manchester City need to win the Champions League to be recognised as a truly great team by the rest of Europe.

After beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final earlier this week, City face Liverpool in the title race on Sunday to win their treble of the season. Ahead of next weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Jurgen Klopp's side, in the second leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Guardiola said his side was widely recognized for their performance in domestic football. Acclaimed, including three Premier League titles since 2018.

But the City boss admits that unless they become European champions, City will never be in the same level as his Barcelona team. "I think we had incredible words and compliments. The shared feeling in our hearts is that we will remember this time with a lot of satisfaction with what we have done," Guardiola said.

"Sometimes, in order to be happy, we get evidence from the outside that we need to be happy inside, which is stupid. What we want is evidence from the outside that we're doing the right thing. What we're doing is right, what we're doing Also correct.

"I agree with most people who say we didn't achieve anything in Europe, we didn't win the Champions League, maybe they're right. To be recognized by everyone in the world, we have to conquer Europe."

He added: "Will it happen? I don't know - I'm very happy with what we've done here so far. First of all we've had a good time. We've done a lot of good things and that's how I feel. But it doesn't matter if it's enough. I don't care at all.

"A lot of people have said good things about my team and we appreciate that. The things we do and the way we do it - dominated many times - I'm sure you'll agree, five seasons is a long time span "In those seasons, we were always there, which was a good thing."

Despite Liverpool playing two games short at the time, Manchester City have seen Liverpool gradually close the gap at the top of the table after a 14-point lead over their main rivals at one stage of the season. Guardiola admits that Sunday's result at the Etihad Stadium will have a big impact not only on the title race but on his entire season.

"It's just one game at a time. This game will be different from the next game. The FA Cup will depend partly on the consequences of what happens on Sunday," he said. "But it's a game Guardiola admits Champions League victory is necessary for Manchester City to be considered great
