Postpartum Depression is the Depression that occurs in the weeks to months following childbirth when the mother has intense feelings of sadness, loss of interest and pleasure, excessive crying, poor sleep and appetite, feeling guilty for no reason, hopelessness, thinking excessively about death or even suicide.
The mother also feels disconnected from her newly-born baby, feeling no love or need to care for the baby as well as even feelings or impulses to harm or even kill the baby in severe cases.
But Motherhood is supposed to be a thing of joy and excitement. Unfortunately, in postpartum depression that does not seem to be the case. The mother feels dejected and distressed with all the full blown symptoms of depression. But why is that? Well, it is due to a combination of biological factors that are mainly hormonal changes, and psychosocial factors to do with life changes occasioned by the childbirth.
I have done a video on symptoms of depression, another one on causes of depression and yet another one on why depression is commoner in women. I will put the links to the videos here.
